SQUIRE GORHAM’S WILL REQUEST LONDON, July 6. Directions to Brighton Corporation that they shall prefer a sportsman, and not a total abstainer from alcohol or tobacco, in selecting an incumbent are given in the will of Mr Ambrose Gorham, the sporting bachelor squire cf Telscoinbe, Sussex, who has left his estate on trust to the corporation. The will adds: “I particularly direct that the corporation shall not seek the advice of, and shall not necessarily act in accordance with any suggestion or advice proffered by the bishop of the diocese or by any Church dignitary as to the selection of such incumbent.”

No erection or building (other than farm buildings) shall be set up within a- quarter of a mile of Telscombe Church, except in the case of necessary replacement or alteration, in which case the new buildings must be of the same style as the old and not more than one-third bigger. -.

Unless necessary in the interests of safety or health or good estate management. no external alterations shall be made to the main fa.bric of the existing buildings, nor shall any existing buildings be pulled down.

No building, booth or tent on any part of the Telscombe property (other than the Village Club) shall be used lor th e retail of any refreshments. The Corporation shall not cut or lop any trees, except in the interests of safety. No set gardens or park shall be made or laid out. and no shelters or tovered seats placed. Half of the estimated net income rom the residuary estate to be paid : s augmentation of the stipend of the incumbent. The balance of the income, after various yearly payments to the chinch, schools, club and deserving poor, to he applied towards the upkeep of the estate.
