GREYMOUTH BALLOT.

r [tq the editob.] Sir,—The Greymouth Unemployed Workers’ Movement, is taking a ballot of the unemployed. The question asked is: “Should we demand work instead of rations from the Mayor’s Fund?” This question requires a lot of answering. At the present we receive through the fund rations, coal, meat, boot repairs, ami clothing. If the depot is closed down will the boot repairs, coal, clothing, and meat be cut out? If so, 1 think we are backing a. loser by asking for work, especially as our earnings from the fund would be taxed. lam of the opinion that the G.U.W.M. leaders are again demonstrating their incapability by their bad management, of this question. 1 suggest that they, (1) Ignore this ballot; (2) Ascertain the true position from the Relief Committee and inform the unemployed; (3) Take a fresh ballot and (-1) When this matter is finalised they all resign their offices and let us see if it is possible for us to get a. worse executive than wc now have. Many of the unemployed think that those who prefer it may work and those who want rations may. still get them. This impression is created by the not very lucid manner in which the president’ of the U.W.M. explained the business. I would rather hear a. statement, from the Mayor in regard to this matter for he, unlike the G.U.W.M, knows what he is talking about.—Yours etc. MUMBLING.
