HOKITIKA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA. August 14. Sunday was a busy day at the Hokitika Aerodrome. The crowd of sightseers were on the grounds early to witness the pupils taking their lessons under dual control. One pupil had advanced sufficiently to make a solo flight. Captain Mercer, in his Moth, took Mrs Brown (England), to Waiho and Weheka, circling over the glaciers. Major Ward (Auckland), in Mr. Parry's Redwing machine, flew to Hari Hari and Matanui districts to inspect, from the air. some timber areas his company has taken up. Mr. Nancekivell’s Spartan plane made several circuits around Ross, Koiterangi and Kokatahi, and Capt. Powell, of the Powell Shipping Company, flew with him to the outer Wanganui river to make an inspection of the outlet with a view to reporting to the company as to the possibility of shipping timber direct from that locality.

Mr J. A. Murdoch, with Captain Matheson as pilot, flew in the Redwing by inland route to Waiho Glacier, where pilots, passengers, and numerous visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by Messrs. Graham Bros. They left 'Waiho at 4.30 p.m., inspecting the Gillespies area, the Okarito dredge at. the Five Mile, and also noted the alteration in the outlet of the Okarito harbour, returning to the Hokitika Aerodrome, at 5.30 p.m. The day was ideal for flying. On the Saturday, Mr. Nancekivell returned from Timaru, bringing Mrs Lyons and child, ami Mrs Nancekivell as passengers. The plane has been refitted to carry two passengers. The funeral of the late Mr. Augustus Thorpe took place on Sunday afternoon, there being friends present from all over the district. The Rev. C. O. Hailwood conducted the funeral rites of the Methodist Church.
