INCIDENT AT SYDNEY

[BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, August 14. A man who departed from New Zealand aboard the Marama was missing when the vessel berthed here to-day. Detectives were unable to locate him, but, his luggage remained. Passengers declared that a. man beckoned to three boys in a rowing boat near the wharf. They drew alongside the Marama, and the man slid down a rope and escaped. BOYS TO RESCUE. (Received August 15, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 15. The deported man who escaped from the Marama is Stephen Sterio. The boys who rowed him ashore, told the police that a man jumped from the stern of the vessel into the water, and started to flounder about. He could not swim. The boys helped him aboard the dinghy, and rowed him to the wharf, where. the man removed his suit, disclosing old dungarees. coat and cap underneath. Sterio was sentenced in the Auckland Court on February 16 last.
