BEER FROM THE VINE

AN ITALIAN PATENT. ROME, July 6. The production of beer from Ihe vine is one of the latest suggestions for remedying Italian economic ills. At present there is an over-production of grapes, coupled with great, difficulty in disposing of the wino which they yield. Thirsty people. it is complained, call for a glass of beer in preference to wine, especially bet ween meals. They ignore the fact, that its ingredients arc not all produced in Italy. Prof. Mazzi, of Conegliano, lias now discovered a method of solving the economic problem. Using grape juice as his basic ingredient, the professor has succeeded, it. is claimed, in producing a type of boor identical in its appearance and alcoholic content to that produced from barley. it is added that the new process, which is patented, in Italy, was the result, of much patient but inconclusive experimenting on other materials, such as rice.
