SOCCER FOOTBALL

PULLER RETAIN DAWSON CUP. Little Soccer was played locally on Saturday, the main attraction being a Third Grade fivc-a-side. Eleven I earns participated. and in spite of a heavy jronnd some interesting games resulted. Tech. A. wore winners and though hard pressed by both Marist A and Grey A, were definitely the rni standing combination of the tournament, and fully deserved their success. in spite of a greasy ground, the icpresentative game at Westport was a bright and open exhibition of football. Overhead conditions were good, and there was a fair attendance. Westland opened in promising fashion, and were two goals up in the first ten minutes, but. as the game progressed it became increasingly evident that Buller were a superior combination, possessing a half-line. Though honours were even ai. half-time, tile speed of the Buller eleven and the high standard of their halves wore the Coast down and towards the end they were definitely on top. BULLER V. WESTLAND. The teams were: — Buller (holders):— Archibald. W. While, Fairley, W. Scott, G. Orman. T. Graham, T. White, C. Orman, J. Blyth," W. Trotter and R. Scott.. Westland (challengers): —Timlin. Wick, Marley. Marshall. Pattinson, Cowe, Coutts, Anderson, Malpass. Shortt and Crowe. Buller won the toss and were- the first to take the offensive, Marley clearing. West land made a brief incursion into the Buller territory, but were soon forced to the other end where Crowe crossed a beauty for Anderson to open the score. Westland 1. Buller 0. Buller came through from the kick-off. and Blyth hit the bar. The play was fast and open, with both sides showing good form. Malpass was nearly through but a bye-kick’ relieved Buller. White chared from the Westland forwards to place Buller on attack, a fruitless corner resulting. Westkind came away on the right, Coutts crossing well* for Fairley to relieve.
