NAME SUPPRESSED
BANK HOLD-UP CHARGE. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON N., August 12. Aged nineteen, rather stoutly built, a- young man appeared before Mr Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, charged that on August 11. being armed with an offensive weapon, a loaded revolver, he did attempt to rob William Loudon, teller at the Union Bank of Australia. The charge was the sequel to the arrest of a man following a sensational incident at the bank yesterday morning. The police asked for and wore granted a remand till Friday next. Counsel for the accused asked for the suppression of the accused’s name in the, meantime. The Magistrate: But it is already published. Counsel: So fur as Palmerston North is concerned. The Magistrate commented it was hardly a kind of case l where the name should be suppressed. Counsel said he understood that the accused was being remanded for, observation. His people had no idea he was in Palmerston North. The Maigistrate: He is fairly young. Counsel: I think the accused will be sent to Wellington later tor observation. The Magistrate: He may not be hltogether responsible. Perhaps, under the circumstances, the name should bo .‘'oppressed until the full facts come out. It is an unusual charge. 1 have some hesitation. Had he been an older man, I would not have suppressed the name. However, accused may not be responsible. That would be a good reason for suppression. There can be no harm in suppressing the name while on remand. Accused’s name was thereupon suppressed. MASTERTON THEFTS. MASTERTON, August 12. William Munn McDonald, concerned in the Palmerston North bank hold-up, has admitted to the Palmersrtou police having committed a series of burglaries at Mast.erton.
