FAIRBANKS MANSION

CAUSE OF MARITAL TROUBLES. LOS ANGELES. July 7. Douglas Fairbanks’ penchant for roaming around the world, hobnobbing with nobility, contrasted with Mary Pickford’s fondness for her own fireside in their magnificent Californian home, “Pickfair,” shows*partly what is at the bottom of their estrangement. “Pickfair” is exclusively Doug’s investment, and when he recently suggested that the mansion should be sold, or else that Mary should personally pay its operating expenses, the fat was in the fire. It is significant that Mary, in announcing the contemplated divorce, says it is true that “Pickfair” is for sale. Mary became indignant when, recently, her name was linked with that of Buddy Rogers, actor and orchestra, leader, and again with that of Clark Gabie. Fairbanks is in London, and probably will make his home abroad. “Mary is broken-hearted,” said her personal representative, adding that it was Douglas’s wanderlust, coupled with Mary’s wish to retire permanently from the films to complete domesticity, that brought about the difficult situation.

“I can live on coffee and handshakes. No woman can keep up with me,” boasted Fairbanks recently. With its 12 acres of ground, “Pickfair” is valued at 500,000 (£100,000).
