GUANO ISLAND
DISAPPOJNTING ACQUISITION Glipperton Island, which for over seventy-five years has been the subject of contention between Franco and Mexico, is uow definitely French, having been conceded by arbitration. It is a tiny rock spot in the Pacific,
SOO miles off the Mexican coast. The only thing which made it important was its rich deposit of guano neatly three feet deep. The French training cruisei; Jeanne d’Arc has just taken formal possession of (he island. But disappoint-, inent awaited speculators. Somebody’ had already removed every scrap of the guano, and many years must pass before there is likely to be any considerable deposit of this valuable fertiliser.
