BUCKFAST ABBEY

GIFT ALTAR-PIECE ERECTED. LONDON, March 31. When Buckfast Abbey was consecrated in August last, much disappointment was expressed at the failure to secure the altar-piece of gold, silver, and precious stones, which had been left to it by the late Mr Henry Schiller, of Wimbledon, a generous benefactor. The altar-piece, which had been made on the Continent, was then at Cologne. It was impossible at the time to meet the heavy Customs charges on its importation. During the last few days a settlement with the executors has been effected, legal difficulties overcome, and Customs duties paid. The altarpiece has now safely arrived at Buckfast, where it was unpacked with no little excitement by the monks. It has been placed in position, but will not be unveiled until Easter Sunday, when Abbot Vonier will sing solemn High Mass.
