METCALFE’S RECORD. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, May 5. Officials of the New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association decided yesterday that J. P. Metcalfe’s Australian. running high jump record of 6ft 3 7-Sin., established at the Sydney University athletic championships on Wednesday, cannot be accepted. The decision has caused indignation among members of the University Athletic Club, officials of which intend to press the matter further. The association has ruled 1 that, before the date of the fixture, an athlete must announce his intention of attacking a record, and association officials must be appointed to supervise the event. The University championships were considered to be a club fixture, and as the association was not informed of the attempt, on the record its acceptance. it. is stated, cannot be endorsed. ROWING MELBOURNE, May 11. The final of the Public Schools head of the river race was rowed on the Barwon River to-day, and resulted: — Wesley College 1, Geelong Grammar School 2, Scotch College 3. It was won by half a length. BOXING. [per press association.] DUNEDIN. May 12. Bert Bowe and George M’Ewen, of Invercargill, have been matched for the professional middle-weight boxing championship at Dunedin on May 23. Percy Hawes, of Christchurch, lias been matched with C. Buckley, of Dunedin, for a supporting professional contest.
Tom Croft, of Stillwater, has been matched to meet Frank Prendergast, of Southland, in a middleweight eon test at Auckland on June 3. Prendergast knocked out G/eorge McEwan, ■middleweight, champion, in the sixth round of a bout last week, but the title was not at stake.
