MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

GREYMOUTH CANDIDATES CONTEST FOR MAYORALTY With the closing of nominations, at noon to-day, interest in the municipal elections, to be held throughout New Zealand on May 3, has assumed definite form. The Mayoralty of Greymouth is .to be contested, for the first time since 1927, and Mr' J. W. Greenslade, the present Mayor, will be opposed by Mr F. L. Turley, a resident of Cobden, member of the Grey Power Board, member of the Greymouth Technical School Board, and secretary of the Westland Timber Workers’ Union. Mr Greenslade has been Mayor for the past six years, having been elected in 1927 and re-elected unopposed in 1929 and 1931. There will be a contest for tbe nine seats on the Greymouth Borough Council, eleven candidates having been nominated. All the sitting councillors seek re-election, and the new aspirants to municipal honours are Messrs F. F. Boustridge and A. McCarthy. Keen competition is indicated for the four seats on,.the Grey River Hospital Board, as Borough representatives. Three of the sitting members, Mrs K. O’Brien and Messrs R. A. Barrowman and J. Kyle, are again offering their services, but the fourth Borough representative, Mr R. E. Clarke, has not been nominated for a further period. There are five new candidates, Messrs F. F. Boustridge, A. Mosley, J. B. Kent, G. Perotti, and F. L. Turley. The three Borough representatives on the Grey District Power Board, Messrs J. W. Greenslade, J. B. Kent, and W. H. Parfitt, have been re-elect-ed, unopposed. Following are the various candi- • dates, and their nominators: —

CANDIDATE’S DEPOSIT. The fact that a deposit of £lO is required from a candidate for the Mayoralty, and £3 from a candidate for the Borough Council, Hospital Board, or Power Board, has led to several enquiries regarding the position. The Returning Officer (Mr F. H. Denton) explained, to-day, that the Act provides that, if the candidate does not poll one-eighth of the votes polled by the successful candidate, or, as the case may be, by the successful candidate polling the fewest votes, the deposit shall be forfeited. Teichelmann, A. J. Thompson, and M. McGavin. Mr D. J. Evans did not nominate. The following were nominated for the Harbour Board (three required): E. W. Heenan, N. Warren, and J. Cuttance. Hospital Board (three required): J. Fox, T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, M. McGavin, and the Rev. H. J. W. Knights. Mr Fox is a new nominee. DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, April 19. Five candidates have been nominated for the City Mayoralty, as follow: R. S. Black (sitting Mayor), F. W. Mitchell (Deputy-Mayor), Rev. E. T. Cox, C. M. Moss, and M. O’Rourke (Communist). Twenty-six candidates, including full Citizens and Labour “tickets,” are standing for twelve seats on the City Council. The Labour Party is not contesting the Mayoralty. AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, August 19. Mr G. W. Hutchison, the sitting Mayor, and Mr H. G. R. Mason, M.P., have been nominated for the City Mayoralty. There are 43 candidates for 21 seats on the City Council.
