HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, April 13. The Hokitika Borough Council nlet last evening. Present: The Mayor Mr G. A. Perry., Crs. 'l'. W. Duff. A. R Elcock, E. W. Heenan, Jas. King, and G. Heinz. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Stuart, Teichelmann, Armstrong, and Evans, the latter hoping the present councillors will be elected and have a happy term of office. The Secretary of the Hokitika Fire Board wrote, notifying the Council under Section 12 of the Fire Brigades Act, 1926, to elect two members as representatives on the Hokitika Fire Board for the ensuing two years, 1933-35. —Messrs Elcock and W. Braddon were elected as representatives of the Hokitika Borough Council on the Hokitika Fire Board for the ensuing two years. Mr H. H. Staines’ application for domestic water supply to new residence in Gibson’sQQuay,ay was granted on the usual conditions. Miss Eileen Collett, secretary of the Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club, applied tor the use of No. 2 field in Cass Square,as a playing field. The Chairman of No. 12 District of the Main Highways Council wrote, asking that Main Highways estimates for 1933-34 be now supplied, and pointing out that only a small amount wil be available from the Construction Fund for new works; also asking that the Council submit any applications in respect of the declaration of new main highways, but stressing the point that the Board has intimated that, in view of the financial position, there is very little prospect of increasing the present mileage of declared main highways except in exceptional circumstances. The Secretary of the Hokitika High School Board wrote, asking the Council to nominate a representative on the High School Board for the ensuing term. —Cr. J. King was re-appointed. A deputation consisting of Messrs A. H. Lawn and W. H. Stopforth was introduced’ by Cr. Heenan, on behalf of the Rugby Sub-Union. Mr Lawn asked if it were possible to grant more than one day to charge for admission to Cass Square. It was desired to charge on sixteen days. In Greymouth the Union had its own ground, and when any team visits the Coast 'J- cannot see any further than Greymouth. Good football was played in Hokitika, and' the Union wanted 1 to put Hokitika on the map in connection with representative football. The Union was in need of funds. It was resolved that authority be given the Rugby Sub-Union to charge for admission to Cass Square on sixteen days for the season, The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £233/13/4, payments £447/3/5, debit balance £685/19/-. Accounts aggregating £666/2/4 were presented and passed for payment. The Foreman’s report on work done during the month was received. The Abattoirs Manager reported: Animals slaughtered during March, 27 cows, 20 heifers, 40 bullocks, 245 sheep, 200 lambs, 27 calves, 4 pigs; condemned'—4 heifers, 1 bullock. Fees received £7l/10/-; for same period last year £77/2/-. In connection with the time for keeping open of billiard saloons, it was stated the police were opposed to extending the time to 11 p.m. It was reported that the outlets of borough drains in the Hokitika River were "in danger of being silted. Considerable discussion ensued on the question of turning the river. The Mayor said the problem was a serious one tor the Borough, which had no money to spend. There is a tendency for the rivei* to come north again. He said that Sir John Coode reported that in flood the Hokitika River had 33 times more water than in normal times. It was decided to wait and see how the river will act. If the silting occurs, some steps will have to be taken to clear the debris away.

COBDEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Cobden School Committee was held in the school-room last evening; present: Messrs R. Jamieson, U. Mettrick (sec), J. S. Ford, G. Williams and Mrs Burrell. Apologies for absence were received from Mr O. H. Brailsford (chairman), and Rev. W. Beaumont. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Jamieson was voted to the chair. The headmaster, Mr Barrett, was also present. The headmaster reported that the average attendance was just over 94 pei- cent, and was maintaining that average. Various requirements were noted and recommended for consideration to the incoming committee. Considerable discussion took place concerning the rate of progress on the levelling of the playground. It was decided to apply to the Labour Department for another nine men, and to obtain sufficient stone to complete the sides of the creek deviation. At the conclusion of the meeting, the headmaster thanked the members of the committee for their kindness and consideration during the year.
