Favoured with beautiful weathei yesterday, the Westport jockey Club concluded its annual meeting. Theie was a large public attendance, and racing was decidedly interesting. Close finishes were seen in every race, and the meeting passed off without any accident of a serious nature, occurring. The meeting was remarkable for the number of dividends paid, which exceeded double figures, and those that went close to double figures. It was not a good gathering for the club, nor for that matter for the public generally, as the money paid out was confined to a few. Considering that weather conditions on Saturday were a handicap to the Club, and the large dividends returned, the result of the gathering must be deemed satisfactory. Yesterday’s figures were £5432, as against for the corresponding day last year,, the total for the meeting being £10,399a, as against £11,639 last year, a decrease of £ 12395. HOW THEY RAN.

Dawn o’ Day: After getting away well, in the Flying Handicap, yesterday, drifted lo fourth position, but in the straight had too strong a finish. She paid over a score to win, and a very acceptable price on the place machine.

Marmoration: Ran a much improved race yesterday than she did on Saturday. She was early with the leaders, but when it came to finishing, she was found wanting. A stake should come her way before the circuit has finished, as she will improve with racing. Marmoration is now in J. Walsh's stable.

Gold Arrow: Was always in the firing line, in the Flying Handicap, and the racing at West port will improve her. An Inquiry:

There was an inquiry into the running of Dawn o’ Day, and Gold Arrow yesterday, as compared with that of Saturday. The explanation of the parties was accepted.

Ravine’s Westport Cup: . Ridden in behind the leaders, Ravine came away in the straight, and took the lead fifty yards from the post, to win the Westport Cup, in convincing fashion. This horse was much benefited by Saturday’s race, and should win again before the circuit has concluded.

Had Every Chance: Argentic had every chance in the Westport Cup race, but was not good enough in the run home. Yet on the big side, Argentic will be improved as a result of his recent outings. A big track will be more to his advantage, and the C.J.C. meeting might find him leading a field home.

Fought for Her Head: Miss Mercia juipped out smartly in the Westport Cup, and careered away, well clear of the others, and fighting with A. Eastwood for her head. She would not be steadied, and as a result ran herself out after a mile had been covered. Shorter distances suit her better. Lost His Rider:

After a few yards had been covered in the Westport Cup, Gold Bag was noticed running at the rear of the field, with an empty saddle, C. Eastwood, the rider, having been dislodged. He did not sustain injury. 111-Favoured in Running:

■ A fast favourite on both machines, Lady Rene was regarded as unbeatable in the Scanlon Handicap yesterday. She met witli interference, being knocked back, and galloped on during the race. With a splendid effort in the straight she overhauled the leaders, but when acclaimed as the winner, Monastic, with a great effort, got up to beat her on the post. Fir,st Out-First Home:

Pakitere was one of the form horses that won yesterday. She was taken to the front at barrier rise, and A. Ellis kept her up to her work all through. She won well, but weight will now greatly handicap her winning yet she is better now than she has been for many a day.

Slow to Find Feet: Jael is not the best looking horse that one would wish to see on a racecourse, but she is a bull-dog finisher. She is slow to find her feet, and generally gives the opposition a start. She did -this yesterday, but although standing several of the others upgood starts at the bottom of the straight, she came with her usual finishing effort to get third. His turn is not far distant, and he is capable of running out a strong mile-

Not Yet Ready: A horse that raced at Westport, and which will improve is Coll. He was not quite ready, but next week’s meetings will probably see him holding a prominent place, in whatever races he contests.

Knocked Twice: Only a handful, but built of the material that makes winners, that honest little galloper, Knocklong, won in her two starts at Westport. She will race at the C.J.C. meeting, and can be depended upon to make a bold showing. Her. victories at Westport occasioned her no serious effort.

Stopped Quickly: Awamutu cannot stay for much over live furlongs. He had every chance to win yesterday, but after leading to the straight, was left without a gallop. Five furlongs in his distance.

Monastic's Great Surprise: Monastic was ridden a good race when he won yesterday. McCarthy kept him for a run in the straight, and he responded well, to hold off the fastfinishing Lady Rene, by a head. Monastic returned a. win dividend of more than a quarter of a century. White Doe:

Was a picture of fitness at Westport. She won the Farewell Handicap yesterday like a good one, and as easily as she won the Morley Handicap on the opening day. Jumping out smartly, White Doe led Purse, but the latter could not make any impression on the leader, who shook off a challenge by the fast-finishing Eaton Hall, and won full of running. Her next, outing will be at Hokitika.

Not So Good:

Many who placed their trust in Miladi at Westport, do not now consider her as any great champion. She had an uninterrupted run in the race for the Cup yesterday, and although she finished second, it was no outstanding effort. In the Farewell Handicap she had every chance to make amends but although again made favourite, the confidence placed in her ability was not justified.

Eaton Hall: Ran well, but not quite good enough, at Westport. He is rounding into good racing condition, and is developing into a determined finisher. A stake should come his way before long. He was slow to find his feet at Westport, otherwise he would have been close to the winners in his races. He requires vigorous riding. Gold Sand:

Was carrying a little too much condition at Westport, and failed to stand up to a hard finish. The racing will improve her, and she will have many friends in her next start, which will probably bo at Kumara. She did not get away too smartly yesterday, but came with great speed up the straight, but had had enough fifty yards from the post.

Noteworthy: Did not show at Westport that he is likely to recover the form that stamped him as a, good galloper two seasons ago. He is only seven years old. but has apparently lost his speed, for it is a long time since he galloped with any freedom. It is doubtful whether Mr. W. S. Clark will persevere with Noteworthy after Easter racing, if he does not show better form than he did at Westport. Reserve Fund:

Looked in good shape at Westport, but although she began smartly, and held a prominent position over the early stages, she petered out. when coming up the straight. The racing might, improve her, but just_now she does not appeal. Reserve Lund will be raced throughout, the Coast circuit.

Expensive Trio: Three horses seen out at Westport that, might, be said to have very poor prospects of paying for their keep l , and making a. return for the outlay necessary to race them, are Atone, Gold Bag and Subdivision. They appear to have had their day, and judging from support accorded them on the totalizator, the public realise this.

Will Win in Turn:

Imasurvey is a galloper with free action, and a long stride. She is a promising young performer, and one that will win in her turn. Imasurvey disappointed in the opening event yesterday, but when contesting the Charleston Handicap ran really well. After getting away slowly, she gradually improved her position, and beat the others in the race as easily as Knocklong beat her. By Surveyor— Imaribbon, Mr. E. W. Spencer’s galloper is bred along lines that give hei* speed and stamina. Surveyor was a high-class performer on the New Zealand turf, and Imaribbon, in 1920, won the Feilding, Foxton and Marlborough Cup races.

Knocklong Re-handicapped: A message from Christchurch today advises that Knocklong, as a result of her Westport victories, has been re-handicapped for the Papanui Handicap, at the C.J.C. meeting, her allotted weight being now 8.2, in place of 7.11.

Not Going to Ellerslie: An Auckland message states that Refresher was scratched for all engagements at Ellerslie, at 2.24 p.m yesterday. Riverton Re-handicaps:

Re-handicaps for the Riverton meeting are: —Waiau Steeplechase: Pinion lOst 21b; Great Western Steeplechase: French Fleet 10.1; Visitors’ Hack: Slaemish 8.7, Irish Birdcatcher 8.4, Great Shot 8.2, Clara Bow 7.13, Fair Vision 7.10; Pourakino Handicap: Royal Duke 8.11.

Yet to Score: Mr. W. H. Ballinger’s horses, Shootist, Flower, Fallow and Purse, look well, but they failed to score a winning bracket at Westport. Purse, a three-year-old filly, is a stylish-looking galloper and is the one most likely to do best over the circuit. Flower is not the horse she was when racing on the Coast twelve months ago. She stood at the post last Saturday, but got away well yesterday, only to close up quickly in the straight.
