SUCCESSFUL SPEED TRIAL. , [PKB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, March 31. Leaving Lyttelton at 10 a.m. today ,H.M.S. Diomede carried out a speed trial, arriving at Wellington at 5.30 p.m., thus taking six hours 25 minutes in steaming the 175 miles. At times the cruiser attained a speed oi over 27 knots an hour, but no attempt was'made to use her maximum speed of 29 knots. Bad weather was encountered, the vessel meeting a heavy fog at noon, and the speed was slowed down for an hour till conditions became clearer. During the latter half of the trial, heavy seas, with a wind of gale force, caused her to take large quantities of water on board. The Diomede stood the test remarkably well, demonstrating that she is a staunch craft.
