To-day’s Racing News

Galloping meetings to comb. Jan. — , , 28—Napier Park. 28, 30 —Takapuna. P Has e been working well a * R apa, and should give a good self in the Zealandia Handicap at Taka puna to-morrow. Chief Cook: Has struck form again, and lie a winner at Thames recently. He is engaged at Takapuna to-morrow, and should give most trouble to Paganelli. Deputy Ruler: Left a good impression when heraced during the holidays. He will be one of those in demand for the Calliope Handicap at Takapuna to-morrow. He is a fancied two-year-old.

Broken Rule: Is to contest the Ferry Handicap at Takapuna to-morrow, and the Wynyard Plate on Monday. Her speed should be suited by the turning course at Takapuna. She will have a fair following.

Rereatu Is Smart: < Head of the Calliope Handicap at Takapuna is Rereatu, a smart juvenile. His good form at Taranaki and Stratford draws attention to his chance tomorrow.

One for Napier: The excellent races which Good Hunting ran at Trentham will not be overlooked by investors if the Gisborne gelding races at Napier Park to-mor-row.

Fine Feature: A feature of the results of the -win and place betting at Trentham was that not one of the 98 dividends, paid was less than the amount invested by the bettor. On two races five dividends were paid on a race, and in both those cases every dividend returned represented a profit.

May do Taranaki: Welcome Lu, whose work has also been restricted on account of the hard tracks, is working freely again, and probably will accompany Tradesman to the Egmont fixture.

Cup Lightweight: One of the lightweights who will command attention in the Takapuna Cup is Great Emblem, as the impression is growing that he is just coming to his best form again. On the plough a few days ago Great Emblem was sent a solid gallop over nine furlongs, running the last mile in 1.45 1-5, a useful effort. He will be ridden in the Takapuna Cup by P. Atkins, who rode him to victory in the St. Andrew’s Handicap.

For Egmont: According to news from Te Rapa, Tradesman has been speeded up during the last few days foiowing a fairly easy time consequent upon the soreness that manifested itself just prior to the holiday meetings. He looks none the worse for his brief let-up, and another gallop or two should suffice to bring him to his best. Probably Tradesman will be raced at the Egmont meeting early next month.

A Good Gallop: Two horses who will be in demand for the Wynyard Plate, or any othei’ race they contest at Takapuna, Gay Marigold and Master Brierly, galloped pleasingly at Takanini the othei’ morning. They were on terms and going easily at the end of five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. They took 14sec. for the first furlong and 49 4-ssec. for the last halfmile, and could have done considerably better. They are in splendid contion.

Fit Now:

Sunny Sky improved with the racing she had at New Year, and is now fit enough to be regarded as a danger in whatever she contests at Takapuna. She has been galloping lately with Merry Damon, and though the old gelding is doing well on the tracks, the mare has been doing the better work. She is engaged in the Takapuna Cup and the Zealandia Handicap to-morrow, and will be one of the prime selections in either event.

Apt: Star Stranger’s half-brother, which was bought at the National Yearling Sales by Mr. G. N. Magill, the New South Wales breeder, for 500 guineas, is to be named Three Star. The colt is by Night Raid from Star Lady, and is to be raced in the partnership by three Australian sportsmen, Messrs. Magill, J. S. Brunton, and R. McKay. The breeding and the fact that there are three owners inspired Mr. Ken. Austin to suggest the name Three Star.. Not Well:

Gold Trail would have had to approach champion class to win the Wellington Cup with 7.13, but it was not. expected that she would disappear from the fighting line as soon as she did. Her trainer, J. M. Cameron, expressed the opinion later in the meeting that the filly was not well on Cup Day, and stated that she had a cough.

Beau Gallante Sore: After the race for the Douro Cup last Saturday it was found that the hot favourite, Beau Gallante, was slightly lame, the result of having come down on his knees at the start. The lameness did not wear off on Sunday, so he was not started on Monday. »

Not Taking on Silver Scorn: It is possible that Autopay’s, next race will be in the James Hazlett. Gold Cup, seven furlongs, at the Dunedin Meeting next month. He will not make the trip, however, if there is any likelihood .of Silver Scorn’s competing.

Tavern Knight Spells: After galloping last Thursday the two-year-old Tavern Knight was lame in front, and it has been found, necessary to treat him to a spell, says a northern report. His traipAr, L. Manson, states that he will be out inde-i finitely, and it now looks as if the last has been seen of him for the current season. Tavern Knight, by Gay Shield —Shebang, is one of the fastest youngsters seen out this season, but since winning impressively in his first outing at the Takapuna Spring Meeting he has not been at his best owing to developing soreness.
