CORSICAN VENDETTA

WOMAN’S LIFE SENTENCE. PARIS, December 3. The acquittal of a man. of a charge of perjury at Bastia, Corsica, has robbed Madeleine Mancini, a Corsican girl, of the hope that life sentence passed on her for inspiring the murder of three people may be reversed. Madeleine was alleged to have persuaded a man to kill her uncle, Antoine Mancini, and two cousins in revenge for their supposed parts in the betrayal and death of her lover, the notorious bandit, Romanetti. She was denounced by Pierre Toussaint Valle, the uncle’s brother-in-law, who said that Madeleine had promised herself to any man who woulld avenge her dead lover.

After the trial Valle was charged with perjurtf, leaving retracted his statements in writing. He declared however, that he was made to do so by a bandit whose services Madeleine was alleged to have sought in connection with the murders.

His acquittal means that there will be no retrial of Madeleine’s case. She has had many champions, including the writer, Mme. Catulle-Mendes, who was recently shot at in Corsica for her efforts on the convicted woman’s behalf.—Reuter.
