Ideal weather, with sunshine, and a good wicket, playing fast, prevailed for the match to-day in which England met a Combined Australian-team, including Don Bradman. The teams are: — England.—Jardine (captain), Allen, Pataudi, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Duckworth, Ames. Leyland, Mitchell, Verity, Paynter and Bowes (twelfth man). The English team Hammond, Allen, Duckworth and Paynter. The gate was insured against rain on Saturday on a £2B premium for £4OO on 10 points of rain. England won the toss, and elected to bat on tho perfect wicket. Leyland was out to McCabe in the second over. The Nawab of Pataudi and Sutcliffe were playing carefully, and they topped their century. There were many changes in the bowling, Bradman, Halcombe,, McCabe, Martin and Evans all being tried, but they did not show much sting. Tho score at lunch was 138 for one wicket.

The Englishmen, by slow batting, took the score to 359 by the end of the day for the loss of three wickets. The bowling was poor, and the crowd barracked the batsmen for not scoring freely. Sutcliffe took 164 minutes to make 100. and Pataudi 118 minutes. Bryant, the Australian captain, persisted with Martin as bowler, while Bradman also had a good spell of bowling. Sutcliffe compiled 169 before Inverarity caught him off Evans, while Pataudi was caught off Halcombe when 129. Scores: — ENGLAND —First Innings. The attendance was eleven thousand, and the gate £BB3. Play generally was slow, relieved by smart fielding, especially by Bradman, who returned marvellously, also by artistic, strokes of Pataudi. Sutcliffe was solid and slow, with attractive strokes all round the wicket. He hit one sixer and sixteen fours. Pataudi was extremely strong on the leg strokes, and gave another fine display, using his wrists in most of his strokes without apparent effort. The century was got in one hundred ana eighty minutes. He hit eleven fours. i Hammond gave a. useful display of forceful defence, at. times going halfway down the pitch to meet the slow balls. His footwork wap beautiful to watch.

Ames had insufficient time to show his qualities. McCabe was the best, bowler, the batsmen treating him with great respect. The local bowlers were well pasted. The fielding was excellent, especially Bradman, with other Eastern Staters.
