REEFTON NOTES

[OUR own correspondent.]

REEFTON, October 28.

For the second time in two days, the Fire Brigade received a call. The ’ alarm was given at the Main Station ! at 6.10 this morning, when it was found that Mr. Isaac Patterson’s office, in Central Broadway, was on fire. The flames had a good hold and the Brigade acted with efficiency, and soon had three or four leads of water in action. The fire was got under control in some 20 minutes, but this time was sufficient to damage the interior of the building, particularly the back portion where the blaze seems to have started. Mr. Patterson is . a heavy loser as his collection of documents is damaged by smoke and in some cases thoroughly saturated with water. The Brigade made an excellent save. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as Mr. Patterson was working until a late hour, and left his premises in good condition, with no sign of fire and no fire had* been lit in the fireplaces for some period. The premises of Mr. Dan Wright and Messrs Miller’s Ltd., on either side of the outbreak were slightly damaged by water. A lead of hose was run through Mr. Wright’s, while a side window was broken by the heat at Miller’s and some of the water penetrated the shop, but not sufficient to cause great annoyance. Mr. J. O’Brien, M.P., is visiting Reefton. Mr. A. Rutherford, a resident of Reefton, during the peak years in the mining industry, is visiting Reefton. i
