CAPTURED BY PIRATES
CHINESE VESSEL LOOTED PRISONER CHOOSES SUICIDE [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. October 15, 8 a.m.) HONG KONG, October 14. A Chinese-owned steamer (Helikon) flying the British flag, commanded by Captain Lefvre, returned here, after being in the pirates’ hands for two days, while voyaging to Saigon. The pirates travelled as passengers, seized control of the ship, forced the officers to their cabins at revolver point, and proceeded leisurely to loot the vessel and rob the passengers, comprising 300 Chinese and two women missionaries, eventually going ashore at Bias Bay, taking five Chinese passengers.
There was a poignant scene when a Chinese passenger intended to be taken ashore, after a touching farewell of his daughter, jumped overboard and was. drowned, rather than submit to the hardships of captivity.
