Systematic thefts of goods from the Ferry Road relief depot (Christchurch), conducted by Mrs A.. 1. Fraer, where he was employed as an assistant, were alleged against James Taylor, a labourer, aged forty-three, who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Taylor was charged with the theft of goods valued at £l, the property of thp relief depot. He pleaded not guilty. It was alleged that Taylor had exchanged goods stolen from the depot for his weekend supply of beer. The accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. The Magistrate said it was absolutely impossible for him to believe accused’s story. The circumstances under which the thefts had been committed were mean and despicable in the extreme and had probably caused innocent men to come u-fider suspicion. The accused had a big list of previous convictions for theft.
