WOMAN ABETS BIGAMY
“The WORSE OF THE TWO.” The wife of an accused man claimed her right not to give evidence against him in a bigamy case at Kent Assizes recently. In the dock was Maris Donald Nash. 27, stated to have been formerly a clerk employed by the Port of London Authority, who was charged with bigamously marrying Emily Annie Howson while his wife, Daisy Nash, was alive.
Emily Annie Howson, 23, shorthand typist, was accused of aiding aqd abetting Nash to commit bigamy. They were both sentenced to three months in the second division.
Mr. P. H. Waddy, prosecuting, said that on March 29 Nash left his wife and two children to go to work and did not return. On that day he went through a bigamous marriage with Howson, a typist in the same office. They had known each other for live years, and she knew perfectly well counsel submitted, that he was a married man. After the ceremony they went to Bournemouth and occupied a small shop.
Mrs Nash was called, but declined to give evidence. Mr .Justice Goddard mentioned that she had given evidence at the policecourt.
A police officer said that it had
come to his knowledge that the wife proposed to start divorce proceedings. The judge said that apparently, Nash, without a word* to his wife, deserted her and her two children. “The greatest regret I have,” added his lordship. “is that while you are serving your sentence it may be that your : lawful wife will not get her allowance. ■ | “I have a strong feeling that you I »»
Howson, are perhaps the worse of the two. You arranged this marriage knowing that this man was bound by every tie to another woman and to his children.” Before sentence was passed Nash told the judge that the business which had been started, and upon which his wife’s allowance was dependent, could be run by Miss Howson. “I do not | know whether it is possible for me to | serve a double sentence,” he added.
