REEFTON, August 13.

In connection with the forthcoming visit of the Minister of Mines to the West Coast, the following telegrams have passed between the County Chairman and the Minister: Hon. Minister of Mines, Wellington: “Have pleasure in asking you to include Reefton in your visit to Coast next week.”. —AV. Blackadder, County Chairman. The following reply was received: “I much regret that the time at my disposal will not permit my including Reefton in itinerary of my trip to Murchison and Westport next week.” Chas. E. Macmillan. The County Chairman then sent the following: Hon. Minister of Mines, Wellington: “Council wished to discuss with you most important matters relating to mining and unemployment, and are very disappointed that you cannot include Reefton bn this visit.” —W. Blackadder, County Chairman. The frosts at Reefton continue, although their severity is on the wane, and the sun is every day gaining in warmth. Long hours of brilliant sunshine are being enjoyed. Such a spell of weather at this time of the year has not been experienced for many long years. . n p At the monthly meeting of the Reefton District High School Committee there were present: Messrs W. B. Auld (chairman), Potter, Dobson, Panckhurst, Hawthorn, Patterson, T. Dellaca, and the headmaster, Mr W. S. Pratt. Apologies were received from Messrs Campbell and Cleaver for nonattendance. The Headmaster reported as follows; —Secondary Department —Roll number, 26 boys, 18 girls, total 44, average attendance, 25 boys, 17.5 girls, total 42.5; withdrawn, 1 boy, 1 girl, total ,2. Primary Department—Roll number, 109 boys, 91 girls; total 200, average attendance, 100.3 boys, 84.2 girls, total 184.5; withdrawn, 3 girls; admitted 2 boys, 1 girl, total 3. Mr E. Clarke, the newly-appointed assistant to the Secondary Department, commenced his duties on the first of the month. It is our intention to send a football team and a basketball team to Hokitika at the end of the term if arrangements for date cam be made. During the month Dr. Ewin visited the school, accompanied by Nurse O’Meara. She reports that the standard of health in the school is very good. First-aid outfit.—The bandages and drugs need replenishing. I should like to obtain authority to expend a sum upon purchase of library books for the Primary classes. The frost has dealt severely with the water supply and sanitary equipment. - Burst pipes and taps have been attended to, but the last heavy frosts have broken a pane of glass and again burst pipes. It was reported that the Education Board had been telegraphed to regarding repairs to water supply, and a reply had been received to repair the damage immediately. Mr E. J. Scantlebury wrote stating that his term of office had expired and asking for support for re-election. The Chairman reported having nominated Mr' Scantlebury for a further term. Several letters were read in connection with the unveiling of the memorial tablet' to the late Lieu,t-Colonel Austin, which took place on June 19. Authority was given to the Headmaster to include a period of Biblereading in the Secondary Department. It was carried that representations be made to the various Women’s Institutes respecting their attitude towards the financing of the school dental clinics, as the school committees interested had failed to appreciate the difficulties of the position Messrs T. Dellaca and J. Patterson were appointed a visiting committee.
