COBDEN NOTES

[OUR own correspondent.]

Some alarm was felt last evening, when a large fire blazed up in the paddocks at the rear of several houses in Upper Ward Street. For some time the position looked dangerous, especially from a distance, but the southeast wind dire/cted the blaze away towards the hill. For some days now people have been burning scrub and bush, mainly on the hillsides. Each evening the glowing trees have made a brilliant spectacle.

The fine weather of the past few weeks has caused a serious shortage of water to householders. In every direction one may see people carrying buckets and benzine tins. The matter is becoming rather serious, as the springs in the various localities are showing signs of giving out. The recently formed troup of Boy Scouts are meeting regularly. The boys will shortly give a demonstration to parents when a controlling committee will be formed to assist the movement.
