KUMARA NOTES
[OOH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The present fine weather is having a bad effect on the gold mining industry in this locality; owing to a shortage of water. Many of the tanks', too, are empty. The late Mr Hugh Adamson, whose death took place at Christchurch in the early part of the week, was a noted runner in his day. Some 45, years ago, when the annual sports gathering was held in Seddon Street, the programme was made sufficiently attractive to draw competitors from all parts of New Zealand, but only those able io cut out the 100 yards in the vicinity of 10 seconds, had any hope of beating “Hugliie.” On one occasion he issued a, challenge to ntn anyone in the colony 100 yards for £5O aside, but the offer was not accepted. As a result of the representations made by the Mayor, Mr Spiers, to the Minister for Mines, when last' on the Coast, miners’ rights can now .be procured at the local Post Office. Shortly before 12 o’clock on Wednesday, it. was found thal the. residence of Mr Sam Harris, situated o»i the Beach Road, was on fire. Luckily, the outbreak was noticed in its incipient stage, and speedily subdued. The damage was slight.
