HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The monthly lecture-chat of the Horticultural Society was held at the State School last evening. Mr. A. H. Greenwood presided over a good attendance. In opening the meeting,.members stood in silent sympathy with the friends and relations of the late Mr. J. J. Breeze. Mr. F. Kendrick gave an interesting and instructive address on culture of sweet peas and dahlias, touching on the following phase's of successful results:—Ground preparation, fertilisers, selection of seed, sowing, budding, stalling and trailing, selection of site, shading, diseases and pests. A collection suitable to Coast conditions was also given by the speaker. Mr. Kendrick’s experience and general aptitude in horticulture was not lost on members, who exhibited a profound interest in the many phases of these popular species, as proved at question time, when experiences of the growing of the different, varieties, uses of fertilisers, climate conditions, etc., were freely' discussed It was pointed out that the present is eportune for the preparation and propagation of chrysanthemums. The Pre sident gave a short address covering important features. This subject will be followed along each month. The offers from the President to take the subject, culture of gladioli, and from Mr. Cooper, on the care, upkeep and general uses of gardening tools, for next month's meeting, were accepted. Mr. Cooper will give practical .demonstrations in sharpening, etc. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Kendrick.
