It is reported that seven hundred men of a Chinese volunteer corps attacked Suichung, a town between Cfiinchow and Sanghaikwan. They were repulsed by the Japanese, leaving over two hundred men dead, after severe fighting. The Japanese garrison had six killed. CONVERSION LOAN. LONDON, July 28. Another flood of applications ,for the conversion of war loan stock, was received by the Bank of England yesterday, totalling 74,000 applications, The total of the applications outstanding is now under 731,000. Continental' holders of war loans continue to convert freely. The conversion scheme has provided a windfall for the stockbrokers, and 'the solicitors, who, besides the banks, are entitled to get a commission as agents, in converting for clients. It is expected that the commission that will be paid by the Government will total three millions.

Seventy-four -thousand further applications for conversion of war loan were received at the Bank of England yesterday, and only 800 application for redemption. The total applications to date -are as follow: Bank of England £1,086,000 post office savings, bank £666>000, Trustees Sayings Bank £86,000, Bank of Ireland £31,0001 Grand total £1,869,000, of which £1,755,000 are" for conversion. The total holdings are about 2,600,000. The Swiss Bank Corporation yesterday deoosited for conversion holdings .of £1,000,000, and other large applications are announced from Switzerland and South Africa. ...
