HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, July 29. The funeral of the late Mr J. J. Breeze, which took place yesterday afternoon, was one of the largest seen in the district for some years. The Hokitika Municipal Band (under Mr C. B. Ross) , playing the Dead March Jin “Saul” and the Freemason’s lodges, preceded the ladder carriage on which was carried the casket and drawn by firemen. Then followed the relatives of deceased, members of the various public bodies to which he had belonged and large numbers of the pub lie on foot and in cars. At All Saints’ Church, the service was conducted by Rev. H. J. W. Knights, M.A. The hymn “Abide With Me” was sung, and the Dead March in “Saul” was played on the organ by Miss Davies. At the graveside, the Rev. H. J. W. Knights again conducted the rites of the Anglican Church, while Rt. Wor. Bro. F. S. Wood, Prov. G.M.' (Westport), conI ducted the Masonic funeral service. I The Band played “Lead Kindly Light” at the conclusion of the service. A large number of beautiful floral tokens of sympathy were received. The Hokitika Harbour Board met last evening l . Present: Messrs E. W. Heenan, D. P. Stuart, N. Warren, W. E. Richards. Mr Heenan was voted to the chair.

Reference was made to the death oi Mi’ J. J. Breeze (a former member of the Board) and it was resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Breeze and family. The motion was carried in the usual way.
