N.Z. TEAM DEFEAT TOOWOOMBA. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] TOOWOOMBA, July 27. The touring New Zealand hockey team to-day defeated Toowoomba by four goals, to nil, after a vigorous game. The teams were: — New Zealand: Moore, Andrews, Parker, Clark, Joblin (capt.), Bollard, Rogers, Best, Bay, Turbitt, Wellbourne. Toowoomba: Emmerson, Andrews, I. Perry, Vagg, Mclntyre, Catfield, J. Perry, Adamson, Curran, Caldwell, Reithmuller.

New Zealand won the toss and began attacking vigorously till Toowoomba cleared, lack of support, however, spoiling their chance. Again attacking, New Zealand forced a penalty corner, but they failed to score. Clark was showing great stick work in the face of much opposition. New Zealand’s brilliant play overcame a Toowoomba counter attack, enabling the visiting forwards to assault the goal vigorously. Bay scoring. A ding-dong battle continued till half-time.

New Zealand on resuming, were again to the tore, till a clearance by Perry took Toowoomba to the New Zealand circle. Lack of cohesion then prevented a score. Again New Zealand attacked, and despite Emmerson’s ’wonderful defence, Bay again broke through and scored. Continuing the offensive, New Zealand pressed round the goal, Wellbourne scoring. Toowoomba next carried the ball to the New Zealand circle, two shots at goal miscarrying. Wellbourne cleared, forcing Toowoomba back to their 'bwn goal circle. However, Emmerson was too good on the defence, till Rogers scored cleverly one minute before-time. Andrews, Clark, Bay and Wellbo'urno were the outstanding players for the dinners.

MAWHERA DEFEAT ROVER B. With the ground in first-class order but. weather conditions rather unfavourable, owing to a strong, cold easterly, the Mawheras had a decided victory over the young Rover B team. The'game was not of an interesting nature, neither team playing good hockey, and the one-sided run of play made matters worse. The prominent players for Mawhera were N. McGrath, J. Smith, M. Little, and C. Tanner; while the splendid defensive qualities of E. Randell, F. Wells, T. Ridlands, and M. Schroder, proved a great asset to Rover. ftjawhera attacked from the start and took play to Rovers’ circle where a few corners took place. Then B. Johnstone cleared to M. Connolly, and with a fine forward rush Rovers wont to their opponents’ circle but O. Forgerson effected a good save, and sent it on to her forwards, who put Rover on defence again. Hero E. Stephens saved three possible goals in succession, and eventually cleared for C.

Tanner, to send a neat centre, right across the goal mouth, and N. Furness accepted, to find the net. Mawhera 1, Rover B. 0. K set up a counter-attack, but the' Mawhera defence was solid. N. Furness passed to the forwards, who continued in a tricky .passing movement,. which ended with N.- McGrath scoring. Mawhera 2, Rover B. 0. From this on, till >.half time, Rover did a little attacking. , With the wind in their favour, Mawhera, on changing over, made “no race” of the second spell, although the Rover defence was good in parts. N. McGrath secured three more goals and J. Smith two, which left the score 7 to nil, in favour of Mawhera at the final whistle. Mr G. Nelson was the referee.
