STRANGE SEA FIGHT

BRITISH VESSELS & U.S. CUTTER. HALIFAX (N.S.), June 17. A claim for damages is to be forwarded to Ottawa on behalf of the two British motor ships, Mary Ruth and Ganeff, against the United Government. According to the affidavits of the captains, the two British vessels, which were alleged to be carrying liquor, were intercepted by the United States coastguard cutter Daphne when over 50 miles off New York. It is claimed that the Daphne’s crew bombarded the Ganeff with various J missiles, which included vegetables, iron bolts, and eggs, and that the Ganeff returned the fire with such handy weapons as molasses and jugs. Then it rammed the Ganeff and damaged the stern so that it was in danger of sinking. The Mary Ruth reports similar molestation from United States revenue cutters. The Mary Ruth came to the rescue of the Ganeff, transferred part of the cargo, and accompanied the vessel here.
