HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, July 9. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. Jas. King, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, D. P. Stuart, A. C. Armstrong, E. W. Heenan. Apologies were received foi’ the absence of Crs. Teichelmann, Heinz and Elcock. The Commissioner of Unemployment, wrote intimating that insurance companies had decided not to proceed with the proposed “pool,” but to reduce insurance rate in respect to relief workers of a flat rate of 25 per cent. The Chairman, No. 12 District Highway Council, Greymouth, wrote intimating that Mr J. H. Clark had been appointed as Traffic Inspector for the No. 12 Highways District, and that the Highways Board would provide him with a car and pay his salary and expenses, without calling upon Local Authorities to contribute.

N.Z. Refrigerating Co., Christchurch, wrote intirpating that the following meat was delivered into Hokitika during the month of May, 1932: Three sheep. Lower Hutt Borough Council, wrote pointing out the heavy cost of insuring relief workers, under Scheme 6, and asking that the Council co-operate in placing the views of Local Bodies before the Unemployment Board, and also that the Council furnish particulars of cost of insurance over a period of two years, and amount received in compensation—The Mayor thought the Council was justified in taking no action.

‘Secretary, Municipal Association, wrote pointing out that as far as local bodies are concerned, ground rents cannot be reduced to less than 5 percent of the ■ unimproved value of the land, as existing April 1, 1932, and asking the Council to support the Association in representations to next sitting of Parliament, to prevent this minimum being reduced.

Canterbury Progress League, Westland Committee, wrote asking for donation to funds for publicity work. — No funds available.

Secretary, Returned Soldiers’ Association, wrote asking if Couuci} would consider subsidising a grant from the Association, for employment of exservicemen who are unemployed.—lt was decided to point out the difficult position of the Council and regretting they were unable.

The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £lll4 19/2 payments

Mr Heenan referred to the damp nature of the work in the Rolleston Street drain and the Botanic Reserve. The Abattoirs manager reported: Animals slaughtered last month: 10 cows, 6 heifers, 68 bullocks, 301 sheep, 33 lambs, 6 pigs, 23 calves, condemned; 1 cow, 1 heifer, 2 sheep. Fees received £62 7/6, for same period last year £7l 6/-. On the recommendation of the Abattoirs Committee, it was resolved to repair office etc., at the Abattoirs material costing £lO 8/7.
