UNEMPLOYMENT

COUNTRY DISTRESS. “There is a distinct need for help for country residents,” stated the Mayor, Mr J. W. Greenslade, to-day. “Any organisation or section of the community, in the country districts, who desire to organise dances or other function of any kind, for assisting unemployment distress, can do so, and this money will be ear-marked, and placed in a separate account in the Mayor’s Fund, to be used in providing work for country unemployed. There is an urgent call in this direction. In the towns, the unemployed have access to the Unemployment Board, the Mayor’s Fund, and in certain cases, the Hospital Board. In the country, the people are to a certain extent inaccessible to many of these benefits, and are quietly suffering, nobody being aware of their position. I feel sure that this would help a position that has been overlooked. I look forward to the country residents organising, and helping in the direction indicated. The position of these residents can be verified through the County Engineer, Mr J. Higgins,” added the Mayor.
