’ Representatives of the literary staff of the “Christchurch Press” on Thursday farewelled Mr Oliver Duff, who recently resigned his position as editor. The associate editor, Mr J. H. E. Schroder, paid a tribute to Mr Duff, and the chief sub-editor, Mr R. V. White, presented the guest with an oak writing desk and a chair suitably inscribed. The death occurred at the Grey River Hospital, last night, of Mr William Carle, single, aged 47 years, late of Nelson. The deceased, who was a fireman on the s.s. Rata, was admitted to the Hospital last. Saturday. He had no relatives in New Zealand. The funeral will take place at Karoro this afternoon, leaving Holy Trinity Church at 2 o’clock. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn will conduct the services.
