UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

HOSPITAL BOARDS’ EXPENDITURE

[per press association.]

WELLINGTON, June 10.

There is no intention on the part of the Government to reimburse the Hospital Boards for the expenditure made by them on unemployment relief, as may be inferred from a statement made by Mr Wallace at the Hospital Boards’ Association Conference to-day, the position being that, the Boards will not be called upon to? give relief to those unemployed who can do any work under the new scheme. This -explanation was made by the Minister of Employment, Mr Coates, when Mr Wallace’s remarks were referred to him. -He said that it was possible that the country generally might be misled because, firstly, the position, as .outlined 'by Mr Wallace applied more particularly to Auckland, and, secondly, the classification of the A, B, and* C class unemployed was not used generally throughout New Zealand. Mr Coates stated that the unemployed who are classed A are those who are fit for work in the countiy, and who can go to the camps. The B class men are those -who are unableto go to the country for hard work, but who are able to work in the cities. The C class men are those who are unJit for work at all, and for whom the Unemployment -Board has been, dn that account, unable to make any provision. The form of classification has -been used more in Auckland.

ALL NATIONS’ FAIR. At a meeting held last evening -for the purpose of forming a committee to further the nomination of a Schools and Hospital Queen in the forthcoming -Carnival, the following were present; —Messrs -C. Neville (chairman), p. Beck, W. D. Murray, F. G. Davies, arid 'C. H. Bose (secretary) of the -Central Committee; Sisters Cullen and O’Neill (Hospital), Misses Kennedy and Aldred (Convent School), Mr A. McLaren and Mrs A. C. Dixon (Technical School), and Rev. Bro. Fergus (Marist Bros.’ School) representing ■the various -bodies -interested. Mr Neville explained the objects of the Fair to the meeting on similar lines to those of the previous meetings, and asked those present to elect delegates to attend Monday ( evening’s meeting of the Central Committee. He also explained that the reason why there were no delegates from Cobden present was because it had been decided to allow -Cobden -to stand alone as a committee. It was moved by Mr McLaren, and seconded by Rev. Bro. Fergus, that those present together with Main School delegates, .form themselves into a Central Committee to organise and further the nomination of a Schools and Hospital Queen. —Carried Unanimously. Mrs Dixon explained that prior to itho Mayor organising the All Nations’ Fair, she had already arranged for a Shakespearean recital -to take place for the benefit of the unemployed, and she thought that it could now be run to further the interests of the Schools and Hospital Queen. It was decided to hold the recital. Sister Cullen, Mr McLaren, Rev. Bro. Fergus, and a Main School delegate were elected to represent the Schools and Hospital Committee at the Central Committee meeting on Monday night.
