A JUDGE’S “DISQUIET.”

LONDON, February 27,

Mr Justice Mackinnon yesterday declared that it astonished him to learn that over 3,000 persons were last year committed in Brixton for debt. He heard the statement with a feeling of disquiet. He was speaking at the annual meeting of the Brixton Prison Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society at the Mansion House. The report of the society showed that the 3,092 imprisonments for debt were under the following classifications:— — Married Women’s Act .. 1,077 Rates 9H Affiliation Court Debts '. ’. 381 County Court Debts .. .. 535 Income-Tax and Other Debts 188 ■“I do riot think I have ever committed anyone to prison for debt,” Mr Justice Mackinnon said, “though I happen to be a county justice in my own county.”
