LORRY VICTIMS
SHOPKEEPER’S DEATH.
[Pffiß PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
GISBORNE, April 11.
After three days’ inquiry, the inquest concluded to-day as to the circumstances surrounding the death of William Edward Hazell, who was fatally injured by a motor van which collided with Hazell while he was standing outside his shop on March 18. The Coroner, Mr P. H. Harper, n delivering his verdict, said it had been clearly established that the deceased was run down by a van driven by a youth named James Rennie Elliott, and sustained injui’ies from which he died later in the hospital. It was also clear that the van was out of control before the collision, and that the brakes were not only defective, but practically useless. Whether the brakes were as defective before the accident or not he (the Coroner) was not prepared to say. He found death resulted, probably, from a fractured skull and other injuries sustained when the van driven by Elliott collided with the deceased.
