BOXING
TO-NIGHT’S TOURNEY. The .Greymouth Boxing Association are placing a test on the business people to-night- It has frequently been argued that a tournament held on Saturday night is not attended by business people, for the reason that they cannot leave their shops until after nine o’clock- The AssQcia.tion recently decided to change to Friday, for amateur tournaments, and the first of such will be held to-night. Just whether business men are as keen to witness boxing, as it is stated they are, cannot be reliably gauged to-night, for the Association have framed such a splendid programme that many who would not patronise an ordinary amateur tournament, will be present at the Town Hall this evening. With such a large number of promising lads to take the ring a boxing feast awaits the public. Never before has a tournament been held in Greymouth, with so few of the well-known amateurs present, as will be the case to-night. A young, and ambitious company of boxers, whose faces will be new to most of the public, will provide the entertainment this evening. It can be said, from knowledge, that each contestant will be in splendid physical condition, and eager to collect what honours he can. Amateur bouts are popular with the public, for the reason, that they provide something worth while, and in fighting for the joy of the game, amateurs throw themselves into the bouts from gong to gong. This is what the public pay to see, and this is what will be offering at the Town Hall from 7-30 o’clock onwards, for three hours to-night. DEMPSEY TROUBLED. - CHICAGO, March 3. The former boxing champion, Jack Dempsey, who has been touring the country giving four-round exhibition boxing bouts, ran into a “tartar” at Chicago, when King Levinsky had him in trouble several times. * Twenty thousand persons watched, the event. Levinsky had a decided advantage in the first and last rounds.
Dempsey is in marvellous form, but is slower than formerly.
