HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.]

HOKITIKA, March 11

The newly-constructed Tennis Court on the beach was officially opened by Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a number of members and visitors. Mr Perry said that the Seaside Tennis Club had requested him officially to open their court, which he had much pleasure in doing. He congratulated

the Club on its splendid court, which could only have been made by cooperative effort. What was once a wilderness of sand and marram grass was now a well-constructed court. He hoped it would prove pleasurable and health-giving. The Club was also in the happy position of being debt free. He congratulated the Club on its ornate pavilion. This is constructed of pungas, worked by a master hand. The Mayor declared the courts open, amidst applause. Afternoon tea was served. The court was fully occupied till darkness intervened.

The Hokitika Cycling Club held a five-mile event on Cass Square last evening. It proved very interesting, being well contested. Jack Havill from scratch led the riders home after a keen tussle with E. Olsen (300 yards). R. Olsen (200 yards) was third. Other starters were E. Cook (scr), K. Hewlett (200 yards), K. Hamilton (300 yards), and C. Cook (300 yards). These are all country lads, there being no competition from the town. The Municipal Band, under Mr C. B. Ross was in attendance and played a short programme. The annual meeting of the Hokitika Fire Board was held last night; there being present: Messrs A. R. Elcock (Chairman), K. E. Bain, C. L. Green, J. J. Breeze and the Superintendent, Mr J. J. Mclntosh. An apology was received for the absence of Mr W. Braddon. Mr Elcock was re-elected Chairman. The _Superintendent’s report showed that five fires occurred during the past year, the insurance involved being £1855, which included the stand on the racecourse. The Fire Inspector (Mr Butcher) expressed satisfaction with the Brigade and its work.

Increased interest is being taken in gold prospecting and mining around Ross. Recently the Mount Greenland Syndicate crushed 60 torib ’of stone for a return of 48 ozs of gold.
