HOSTILE CROWD

THREATENS THIEF-CATCHER. MELBOURNE, March 28. There was almost a riot at the Port Melbourne markets on Saturday morning following the capture of a thief by tho manager of the markets (Mr. J. Freedam). An intensely hostile demonstration was made against Mr. Friedman and Communists tried to provoke the crowd to violence. Mr. Friedman had pursued and caught a thief who had stolen a bundle of stockings from a stall at the markets. Mr. Friedman fired shots from his revolver before the fugitive was caught. Yielding to an appeal by the man’s mother, Mr. Friedman released his prisoner, but a crowd which had gathered was angered and threatened to attack Mr. Friedman, who nred his pistol into the air as a warning. This enraged the crowd, and a riot appeared to be imminent when the police arrived at the markets and quelled the disturbance.
