CRICKET

DISTRICT COMPETITIONS. RESULTS OF WEEK-END PLAY. Fine weather over the week-end added to the enjoyment of the cricket competitions in all grades. Yesterday’s matches produced interesting play, and the teams which won, were generally expected to be successful United B found little opposition from Star, while Marist disposed of Ru<nanga, and Cobden A beat Cobden B. In the B division matches, Brunner scored a double success, defeating Camerons on Saturday, and Kamaka yesterday. The Marist and Runanga teams defaulted. Shortage of grounds resulted in only one match being played in the Saturday senior competition, while a third grade match between Old Boys and Technical resulted in a win for the latter. The matches were:—

“A” DIVISION. United B beat Star 3pts. Marist beat Runanga 2pts. Cobden A beat Cobden B 2pts. “B” DIVISION. Brunner beat Camerons 3pts. Brunner beat Kamaka 3pts. Camerons and Kumara won by default. SATURDAY COMPETITION., Cobden beat United 3pts. THIRD GRADE PLAY. Technical beat Old Boys 3pts. MARIST DEFEAT RUNANGA. At Dunollie yesterday, Marist defeated Runanga on the first innings. The winners went close to scoring a three-pointer, time alone preventing this. Going first to the wickets, Runanga could muster only 88, Wilson 47, and Nicholson 29, being the only batsmen to make a stand. Five of the -other batsmen failed to score. Carr secured the best figures for bowling, taking 4 for 25 runs. Marist did little better than Runanga, but managed to reach 107, Morris 19, Blackaby 18, Clark 17, doing best. Smithson had the Marist players tied up, and finished with the good average of six wickets for 30 runs. In their second visit to the wickets, Runanga again failed, being all out for 64, Wilson again doing best with 17. Morris and Cornish shared the wickets. Requiring 47 runs for a straightout victory, Marist were left with only 12 minutes for play, and at the drawing of stumps, had scored 28 for one wicket. Scores:—

UNITED B HAVE EASY WIN. Playing at Omoto yesterday, United B. scored an innings victory over Star. Hard hitting by United, and uniform scoring, carried the total to 259 in quick time. Rapley, Gilbert, Scott, and De Freatus, scored boundaries frequently, the Star attack holding no terrors. Nelson secured the best bowling average, he taking four wickets at a cost of 88 runs. United’s total was too great for Star, who failed to reach it after two visits to the wicket. A nicely played innings of 61 by Kerr, helped Star to place a fair score on the board, but it was 113 short of United’s, and a follow on, was enforced. Rapley bowled with success, taking six Star wickets, and again in Star’s second innings, he secured the best average. A second collapse by Star brought about their quick dismissal, Ingram being the only batsman to reach double figures. He played forcefully to reach 46, hitting Rapley, and De Freatus twice each for a six. United B. won by an innings and 27 runs; the scores being:—
