SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

LINDSAY AVINS THE MILE. [per press association.] • TIMARU, February 13. The New Zealand Senior Swimming Championships commenced here -today in brilliant weather, before a crowd of fifteen hundred. The standard throughout was exceptionally high, and good times were recorded. One title changed hands, this being in the mile, in which D. P. Lindsay, of Canterbury, defeated the holder, G. Bridson, of Auckland, to. break the present official record by 5 1-5 seconds. T.indsay cut out the distance in 23 minutes 31 3-5 seconds, thus failing to reach his recent Christchurch performance of just, under 23 minutes. Bridson. accounted for the hundred yards in easy fashion, and should retain his other short distance titles. The final of the ladies’ hundred yards' was a great race. .Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland), the holder, established a lead early, but Miss N. Stratton (Auckland) made a great effort to overtake the leader. The pair were almost on terms at the 75 yards, but the champion. with a final burst, gained the decision by a narrow margin. Len Moorhouse (Canterbury) had an easy task to retain the. title of 150 yards backstroke champion. He- practically carried G. Low, the other Canterbury man, over the distance, and won easing up. Won by a yard and a-half. Time 59 seconds. Second Heat: E. McConville Canterbury) 1, D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury) 2, R. Roper (Auckland) 3. Also started —R. Sutherland (South Canterbury). Won by a yard. Time 61 1-5 seconds. Final: G. Bridson 1, McConville 2, Stokes 3. Won by Wo yards, with the same distance between second and .third. Bridson had a lead at the turn, cutting out the first fifty yards in 27 seconds, and won slowng up in two-fifths better time than last year. Lindsay did not start.

Ladies’ 100 Yards (holder, Miss N. Farquhar, Auckland). —First Heat: M. Farquhar 1, B. Lewin (Auckland) 2, J. Brewer (South Canterbury) 3. Won by two yards. Tme 74 seconds. Second Heat: N. Stratton (Auckland) 1, P. Robertson Auckland) 2, S. Campbell (Canterbury) 3. Won by two yards.' Time 71 1-5 seconds. Miss Campbell tired in the last lap, Miss Robertson forging ahead to gain- second place. Final: M. Farquhar 1, N. Stratton 2, P. Robertson 3. Also started — B. Lewin. Won by a foot. Time 69 seconds. Miss Farquhar had a lead of a yard in the first lap, but Miss Stratton put in a good challenge over tho concluding stages, failing to catch the champion only by a foot. Miss Robertson was a. yard away. 150 Yards Backstroke (holder, L. J. Moorhouse (Canterbury).—L. J. Moorhouse 1, G. Low (canterbury) 2. A. Roper (Auckland) started, but was disqualified. A meeting of delegates and divers at the Senior National Swimining Championships recommended to the ; New Zealand Council, that the new | international handbook on diving be' put into effect at once. : It was further decided that a meet-1 ing of judges should be held at each! championships set for divers, for the next year. COAST ENDURANCE RECORD. A successful attempt was made at ■ the Runanga Baths yesterday afternoon, before a good attendance, on the Coast endurance swimming record, Mrs E. Fraser, of Greymouth, by swimming continuously for seven hours, raising the record by one hour. 'The swimmer averaged for the whole -swim 45 strokes per minute, and on the last two lengths of the baths, swam 48 strokes per minute. Mrs Fraser showed no signs of fatigue at (the end of her swim. Congratulations on the achievement were tendered to Mrs Fraser by Mr R. McTaggart, and by Mr V. Robson, President of the Runanga Swimming Club. GREY CLUB’S EVENTS.

SCHOOL RACES. A team of Runanga school-children swimmers journeyed to Westport on Saturday and competed for the Hutcheson Memorial Shield, and for the Tennent Cup. The Runanga Girl-;’ team, comprising M. Griffiths, V. Armstrong, C. lAuld, and M. Adam--8011, were successful in winning the Tennent Cup from the Blackball

School team, holders for the previous year. A particularly good performance for the Runanga team was put up by M. Griffiths, who broke the standard time, over the 25, 50, and 75 yards distances. The boys’ team, comprising A. Crearer, A. Shackley. F. Hart, and A. Rose, were unsuccessful in winning the Hutcheson Memorial School contest, Westport State School gaining the verdict by a narrow margin. A. Shackley, member of the Runanga team gained third place in the diving competition. The Tennent Cup was presented to the Ru nanga team at the Runanga Baths yesterday afternoon, at the conclusion of Mrs Fraser’s endurance swim. TO-NIGHT’S CARNIVAL. Excellent nominations have been received.for the swimming carnival to be held under the auspices of the West Coast Swimming Centre at the Municipal Baths to-night. The carnival was to have been held some weeks ago, but bad weather conditions caused its postponement. Numerous novelty events should add much to the spectators’ enjoyment of the programme. Weather conditions appear favourable for the carnival, and a. good attendance seems assured. Musical items will, between events, he rendered by the Municipal Band. Handicaps for the carnival are the saffie as those previously published. The. following officials have been appointed:— Judges: Messrs E. McDonnell, K. Williams, E. R. Moss, and H.
