On her first visit to Greymouth the auxiliary schooner, Margaret W arrived last evening from Gisborne, and is loading cpgl. for rtetdrn. The Margaret W, vVhich is of 500 tons gross and 289 tons net tonnage, was built in Denmark about 13 years ago, and after trading in European waters for nine years, came to New Zealand, about four years ago, under the command of Captain Watchlin. For a time the vessel was employed on the inter-colonidl run, from Newcastle to New Zealand, but fdr the past year or two, the vessel has been engaged on the Auckland-Gisborne run. The vessel is powered with 265 h.p. two cycle Diesel engines, and can run at ten knots. There is one hold running straight through, making the vessel especially useful for timber cargoes. Collision bulkheads are fitted fore and aft. The winches are controlled by a four-cycle semi-Diesel deck engine. The vessel still carries canvas, find with a favourable wind, often uses the sails as an assistance for the engines. The present engines are fairly new, being fitted about two years ago, in place of a lower-powered four cycle Diesel engine, with which the vessel was originally equipped. The ship is at present commanded by Captain D. L. Clark, with Mr McDonald, first officer, and Mr J. Coleman, second officer. The engineers are, Mr L. Graham, first; and Mr W. Graham, second; Mr W. Tay is chief steward.
