Every Friday, afternoon at half-past five Mr. J.' Holloway .goes to foe 3<Jor of his business with a bag of pennies. He gives, two to every child who is waiting there. And he is disappointed because he cannot get more to cpme along.. , .., . ..
“When I had my . business up in Dean Street ..I .used to see a group of kiddies hanging about outside, and on a Friday I would,g.iye them, a few coppers,” Mr. Holloway explained. “Sometimes it.would be (t shilling to divide between them. It all. depended. Then they got. to coming regularly on Friday for their. ‘pay,’ so I fixed it rit 2d a week and told .them to bring all tho friends they could find. “I always remember that when I Was a kid a few coppers means a lot to riie. 1 was born in the city and lived in it for a number of years. But when I'was a kid nobody gave me money. “You’d be surprised, though, how few turn up on a Friday. I’ve been doing it regularly now for over four years and we hardly ever get more than 40.
“I don’t think we have evey given away more than 10/-, though we always have plenty of money ready. I’d llko to. see a couple of hundred. I don’t mind how many they bring. Sometimes a mother comeg along and we give her a trinner, as Well.”, It was nearly 5,30, and the children had .queued up outside in the alley-way Waiting patiently. Their replies when asked what they intended to do with tho nibney show that sweets were eas: ily first favourite.
