CRICKET

VICTORIA V. S. AFRICANS. CENTURY BY CHRISTIE. [B7 CABLE —PBES9 ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] t MELBOURNE, November 8. The weather was muggy and threatening, but the wicket was good for the resumption o£ th© cricket match, South Africa versus Victoria. Blackie was unable to play, having broken a finger of his left hand whil4 batting. . The visitors proceeded to dig themselves in, the opening pair doing so with a vengeance. Their batting methods were sound, Christy not failing to lay on the wood when anything loose came along. He reached the half century in 105 minutes, his partner then being 18. At one stage Ironmonger had bowled fifteen overs for twenty runs. Then Christy hit him three times to the boundary in one over’. Christy gave a chance to Rigg in the slips at 78, off Ironmonger. A great ovation was given him his reaching second century of the tour. Blackie’s bowling was sadly missed, but the batting showed not many blemishes. Christy gave a splendid exhibition of batting, ha having been in for two hundred minutes, and hitting fifteen boundaries. He has a fine defence, and he 0 hits vigorously at anything loose. Then a sensation came, when Ironmonger got three wickets for no runs in two overs. Play was stopped at five o’clock, owing to there being a bad light, which had contributed, in a measure, to the bowlers’ later successes. There was no further play, and, when stumps were drawn the South Africans’ score stood at six for 212, the total batting time having been 247 minutes. Scores: — VICTORIA—IST. INNINGS .. 284
