RAILWAY SERVICE.

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—Would you kindly allow me space to complain about the present Railway service between Greymouth and Otira, under which the travelling public have to put up with much discomfort and inconvenience owing to there only being one carriage on the train after leaving Stillwater, and neither compartments of that being a smoker. I myself think it disgraceful that six or seven men should be bundled out of a smoker at Stillwater into a carriage where there are several women and children travelling, or rather I should say, bundled like sardines in a tin. I dont think women and young children could travel in more discomfort, especially when men are heavy smokers and some under the influence of liquor. If a man wants to have a smoke without hearing remarks passed he has to take the risk and have it on the platform, and this, Sir, is what is advertised as travel by “rail and ensure yourself of comfort and safety.” Another thing I would like to know is if there were one or more passengers travelling first-class, would they have to vacate their seats and take to the non-smoking waggon and still pay their first-class fare? Now, Sir, I hope and trust that someone better suited to the pen than myself will take this matter in hand, as I think something should be done for the comfort of the travelling public.— Yours, etc., — SMOKER.
