MAGISTRATE’S COURT
TO-DAY’S GREYMOUTH SITTING. Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, held to-day. Two first offenders for drunkenness, one found in Boundary Street, and one in Gresson Street, each of whom had been in the lock-up all night, were convicted and discharged. Edward Cawley, aged 30 years, was charged w-ith being found drunk in a public place, to wit Mawhera Quay, with stealing a scrubbing brush, valued at 6d, the property of Patrick Johnston, and with stealing a pair of tan willow sandals, value at 6/11, the property of Hallenstein Brothers. All the offences were alleged to have taken place yesterday. Cawley pleaded guilty to each charge. Senior-Sergeant C. E. Roach, who conducted the case for the police, stated that the scrubbing-brush had been taken from a tray outside Johnston’s crockery shop, Mawhera Quay, and that the scandals had been unhooked from a stand outside Hallenstein Brothers. The accused had been arrested by Constable Robertson. Nothing was previously known against Cawley, who was a single man and a wharf labourer. There were four witneses. two men and two boys, none of whom was required to give evidence, and none of whom was charging expenses. The stolen property had been recovered.
Accused was convicted and discharged on the drunkenness charge, and convicted and fined 10/- on each of the theft charges. The stolen property was ordered to be returned. Walter Henry Mulroy, aged 27 years, apeared on a charge, that, on or about October 11, he received from Richard Baumgart, the sum of 14/-, on terms requiring him to pay the same to Kennedy Brothers, Ltd., and that he fraudulently omitted to do so, thereby committing theft. Accused pleaded guilty.
Senior-Sergeant Roach saiid that there was another charge pending, with which the police were not prepared to go on with until further inquiries had been made. He accordingly asked for a remand until November 16. The application was granted.
