MAKURA CROQUET CLUB

OFFICIAL OPENING DAY. Gloriously fine weather favoured the official opening for the season of the Makura Croquet Club, held yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance, and with the lawns in perfect condition, many enjoyable games were played. The 1931-32 season was officially declared open by the Club-Captain. Mrs. W. E. Thomas, wffio extended a welcome to all who were present, and expressed the opinion that the glorious weather conditions obtaining were the fore-runner to a most successful and enjoyable season. Mrs. Thomas said that during the past season many enjoyable inter-club tournaments had been played with Reefton, Runanga and Westport, and that it was hoped to play even more of these during the season now commencing. Referring to the Yankee tournaments which, the Club proposed to stage, Mrs. Thomas said that they were.to be played on handicap lines, with the results to be given in points. In all cases the first singles to be played by any two members were to be classed as Yankee tournamen t games, and the' results were to be handed in at the club-house. Mrs. Thomas concluded by extending a. cordial welcome to all visitors and friends to be present at the social tournaments, which the club held monthly. The first ball of the season was sent up by Mrs. Tennent, at the conclusion of Mrs. Thomas’s speech. During the afternoon', a number of games were playe'd;' the winners of the various matches being:—Putting Competition: Mrs. A. Smith; Golf Croquet, Mrs. D. McKay; French Croquet, Mrs. Wilson (Runanga Club); Circles, Miss Sheedy; and Zig-zag, Miss D. McKay. Among those present during the afternoon were: Mesdames Thomas, Fogarty, Whibley, Topliss, M. Phillips, Coburn, A. Smith, D. McKay, Iles, Davies, Mackley, Shuttleworth, A. Coumbe, Ray, Absalom, Wright, J. W. Hannan, T. A. Johnston, H. Herring, Owen, James, Tennent, Hogg, Haglund, Prince, Sampson, Hall, Eaton, Kear, Miss Pratt, Miss M. Pratt, Miss D. McKay, Mesdames Sotheran, Roache, Fell, 1 Smythe, Wilson, Savage, Ericcson, Whitehead, Mercer, Murphy, McQueen, W. Phillips, Reynolds, Robertson, MeCorkindale, Williamson, A. Mosley, Doogan, McDonald, Kaye, Ring, Fairmaid, Casey, Misses Martin, Anderson, Sheedy, and Lemphert. Apologies were received from Mesdames Warnes and Murray.
