SPORTING

N.Z. CUP DAY. THE FIELDS REVIEWED. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] CHRISTCHURCH, November 6. Though the field for the New Zealand Cup this year is high-class, the evenness of the field at the weights has provided ample compensation, and with a good card m other events during the day, the Canterbury Jockey Club might have little to complain of when accounts are balanced, especially if the weather remains seasonable. The going is a that can be desired. LANCER IS FAVOURED. Racing will start at 12.1 p.m. with the Spring Hurdles. What will beat Captain’s Gift on his Wellington form, is the question a great number of people are asking themselves- J hat is easy to answer, for Lancer has gone on fairly well in his work since the Grand National meeting, and has only to remain sound throughout the race to have every chance. Quinopal is the best of the others. FIJI AND GIBRALTAR. The Spring Plate field is an unusually good one and among the 22 acceptors seven of them are'aspirants for Derby honours. Gibraltar has so far shown himself the best stayer, but though he won the Waverley Cup he will be hard put to it to beat Fiji who won well over six furlongs with 9.2 at the recent Wellington meeting; and at fixed weights on Saturday has to carry only 7.7 at a mile. The distance might not be quite far enough for Nightguard, but it will suit Palace and Gay Comet of the other three-year-olds. Of the older divison, Locksley and Dunraven are both recent winners who cannot be counted out. The result may be Fiji, Gibraltar, Dunraven.

THE LINWOOD HANDICAP.

There is nothing below Moorbird in the weights for the Linwood Handicap that is likely to beat her, nor is there anything above her with a better chance. But it is a big field, and the daughter of The Ace needs a chance to get on her feet in the first furlong. Failing her, Hounslow on track work will be handy at the finish, and recent winners such as All Smiles and Chief Cook will also be handy. Arrowmaid and Sharp Thorn are also useful. In a final summing up, the public might go for Moorbird, Hounslow, and Arrowmaid. THE CUP FIELD. The Cup presents a pretty difficult problem. The field may be reduced by the defection of Cessation, who (though not seriously) was injured on the trip south. Gay Crest is the antepost favourite, but he will have to improve on anything he has yet done to carry 8.10 to victory. At the weights another Great Autumn Handicap winner (and a more recent one) Black Duke, appeals more. He has done his work well and looks an even better horse than he did at Riccarton in the Autumn. On this morning’s work, Ephialtes and Admiral Drake are on a par with him and the former, on Harcourt Cup running, must have a chance. In that race he was within 41b of Gay Crest and finished close behind him and is now meeting him on 101 b better terms. Kahikatoa has yet to prove himself a stayer, though so brilliant a gelding must have a chance in the present company no matter what the distance. Compris’ form has been useful and Spearful, Royal Love and Jaloux are all recent winners that must lend interest to the contest which, when all is Over, may have proved to have been a match between Black Duke, Kahikatoa and Spearful.

A BRACKET FAVOURED. If Lack begins as well in the Welcome Stakes as he did in the Wellesley Stakes the problem wil be not to find the winner, but what will fill the minor places. Mrs A. McDonald has two very useful ones engaged in Inflation and La Moderne, while the best from Riccarton may be the Limond filly Pacify, and Dunedin is represented by Wealth and Molten. Of these, Inflation and La Moderne might press Lack hardest at the finish. A RACE FOR APPRENTICES. Fast Passage should go very near winning the Apprentice’s Handicap, though she needs a strong boy aboard to keep her up to it over the first bit. Jason’s Quest and Irish Chieftain might be her strongest rivals. Much depends on the experience of the boy on top. GUSTAVO IS LIKED. The Stewards’ Handicap should be a great betting race, though no doubt the Cropier—Kozan bracket will be the actual favourite. Autopsy on his Epsom Handicap form at Randwick cannot be counted out with all his weight. He looks very well, as does Cimabue, who showed a flash of his old form by running a good third at Wellingtoan. Golden Wings by defeating Bronze Eagle and Croupier at Ellerslie has earned his weight, though on subsequent form Croupier should be his master on this occasion, and another particularly brilliant three-year-old at the weights is the Diacquenod filly Solvent. Though beaten in hack races recently with welter weights she was not disgraced and the 2st less that she has to carry on this occasion will be to her as good as 3st off horses of sturdier Build. She must run well. Those mentioned do not make up the whole of the field, and a comparison between the handicaps and the weight-for-age scale makes Gustavo and Red Heckle have good chances. The former is in at 201 b under the scale and Red Heckle at 181 b. Red Heckle is a G.N. Derby winner, but in his own season Gustavo was a better horse who, though placed in both Derbies, the Harcourt Cup and other races and was a winner of the Dunedin Guineas, was troubled by unsoundness and never really seen .at his best. He has got over that and has been working well. He only needs to get away on even terms and there is nothing in the race likely to beat him off oxer the last furlong. The placings may be Gustavo, Croupier Solvent.

THE RICCARTON HANDICAP. •

At nine furlongs Ravine will be hard to beat in the Riccarton Handi-

cap. His greatest danger might lie in King Colossus and Atholspear. Gibraltar would have to be considered before these two should he be started in this event in preference to the Spring Plate.
