OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT Jeanette MacDonald, beautiful star, co-featured with Edmund Lowe in Fox Movietone’s “Don’t Bet on Women," to be screened to-night and Thursday, feels at home bn the Fox lot, where she recently signed a long time contract. Born arid educated in Philadelphia, shfe moved to New York. and studied singing and dancing, getting her first start in a revue. She went into musical comedy and .had small roles in “Night Boat,” “Tangerine” arid “Irene.” Henry W.. Savage gave her a leading role with Mitzi in “The. Magic Ring.” “Tip Toes" followed and theri several other productions. The supporting cast includes Edmund Lowe, Una Merkel, J.’ M. Kerrigan, Hele Millard, Roland Young, and Henry Kolker. _ • “Parlour, Bedroom and Bath” will be screeried at Blackball to-night and Thursday. “HIAWATHA.” With their production of “Hiawatha”, to take place at the Town Hall this evening, the Greymouth Philharmonic Society are confident of achieving their greatest success to date, arid the beautiful nature of the production and the practise that has been put into it by the ihembers of the Society assure that this high expectation will be realised. A special attraction that should go a long way. to wards inaking the piece an outstanding success is the engagement of Mr. Ernest Short, the eminent Wellington vocalist, by the Society. It is expected that there will be a good attendance at the Town Hall this evening, and lovers of good music will find their tastes catered for to the full. METHODIST SOCIAL. The conclusion of the Methodist Carnival will take place to-morrow night, at Wesley Hall, when the men of the congregation will entertain the ladies at a complimentary social. WAIUTA QUEEN CARNIVAL. The silver anniversary of the discovery of the Blackwater Mine will be celebrated at Waiuta on Saturday next, when a Grand Queen Carnival will be held. The programme for the day continences with a grand procession of pioneers at 11 a.m., followed by a sports programme, including running events, chops, tug-of-war, children’s races, and quoits, and there will be numerous side-shows. The Civic Band frohi Greymouth will be in attendance, and will render a Band Concert in the evening. Reduced fares have been arranged to Waiuta, and admission to the grounds will be free. BAND DANCE. Lovers of Old Time ances are reminded that the Municipal Band Old Time dance will be held in the Band Hall to-night, when all can be assured of a good night’s dancing.
