KING’S DOMAIN.

■ ♦ ■a. hr ■” _ [TO THE EDITOR.] Sir, —Don’t you think it would be a wonderful idea if, say, a few of the unemployed men were put to work on making a track up to the top of the hill in the King’s Domain? Improvements have already been done there, but surely this is the most important, as this is about the only place where one can get a good view of the town. People visiting Greymoutb. oftimes make an attempt to get up there, but turn back, it being impossible as things are at present.—Yours, etc., • J.J<

A “drift” bottle thrown overboard from the research ship Discovery was found on the Makara beach last week by Mr H. Smith, of Northland., The bottle had a special brass attachment over the cork to prevent it from rotting, and when the bottle was smashed a message was found inside stating that the bottle was thrown overboard by Mr W. R. Cblbeck, second officer of the Discovery in latitude 48 degrees 10 minutes south, longitude 146 degrees .31 minutes east, at 2 a.m. Greenwich mean time, on November 26, 1930. According to cabled advice, the Discovery left Hobart on November 23, 1930, for Macquarie Island The| position given in the message corresponds approximately with where the ship should have been at the time. In accordance with a wish expressed in the message, it is to be sent on to England. The bottle and the message have been examined by authorities in Wellington, and no doubts are held as to their authenticity. The Discovery called at Wellington in May while en route from Melbourne to London. Mr Colbeck, who threw the bottle overboard, is a son of the late Captain William Colbeck, w’ho was in command of the relief ship Morning during Scott’s expedition at the beginning of the century.
